Readers’ epistles defend gun possession, reward columnists and tout a Gerlach geothermal proposal

Reward for our July difficulty

I’m thrilled to have RN&R again on the racks! Kudos to Casey Cummings and Kimball Shinkoskey for his or her well-written and considerate letters (RN&R, July 2023). Our state is so wrong-thinking and wasteful of our tax cash. We’re doomed if we will’t vote these people out of workplace. And a tip of my hat to different items within the difficulty: Frank X. Mullen’s Editor’s Observe was spot on, as was Sheila Leslie’s column. A query: why does the federal authorities look to skim cash from Social Safety to fund agendas once we are supporting NASA? Why spend billions to fly across the moon? In addition to being an enormous waste of cash, the harm to the atmosphere throughout launches needs to be great. Abort NASA and put these rocket scientists to work on preserving our planet.  —C.R. Ferris, Reno

Weapons are endlessly

Gun violence can’t be stopped by “eliminating weapons” (RN&R, July 2023). There are oodles of weapons already owned legally on this nation; what’s the plan, go door to door and drive individuals to show over their firearms? Or ask politely to relinquish the weapons and belief the honour system? Because the saying goes, if weapons are outlawed, solely outlaws can have weapons. The logic behind bringing again payphones (RN&R, June 2023) is sensible, nonetheless. —April Pedersen, Reno

GOP wallows in ignorance

Republicans have reached the height of absurdity. Kids are recurrently mowed down in school rooms by crazies with AR-15s and “conservatives” stand mute or say mass homicide is the small worth we pay for the (misinterpreted by them) Second Modification. However let a drag queen learn a e-book to children at a library (RN&R, July 2023) and people “conservatives” are pushed into frenzy. The one issues they’re “conserving” are ignorance, greed and hatred. —Barry DeSena, Fernley

Drag Queens aren’t the issue

The tv program To Catch a Predator by no means caught a drag queen. They DID catch preachers, fathers and different “regular” males. —Laura Barmettler, Reno

Gerlach ought to get geothermal

It’s beginning to sound a bit NIMBY to me.

Whereas the inhabitants of Gerlach (54) is vehemently against the proposed Ormat geothermal energy plant (RN&R, April 2023), the remainder of us are caught within the cities, extra involved with the best way to pay our rising power payments than not with the ability to see the celebs clearly.

Ormat has been putting in protected, clear power crops for over 50 years right here, and seems keen to bend over backwards to satisfy Gerlachian calls for. My proposal: In return for permitting the plant, Ormat might finances in a “payment” of X quantity of donated free electrical energy to the Gerlach neighborhood. A deal could be made with Elon to amass one or two of his electrical semi’s each to make use of as a free transport of products, and as a check mattress for his automobiles. Possibly even kick in a few Teslas and a charging station or two? I wager Ormat would even assist fund all this?

Nah, my writings are likely to piss individuals off, I get hate mail, and no person invitations me for dinner anymore. If it weren’t for making an attempt to assist in giving my grandkids a sustainable future, I’d hold silent. However I can’t. —Craig Bergland, Reno
